What’s new for Recreation professionals for June 2013
LERN Recreation Consultant Position Ended June 30, 2012

I would like to take a moment to advise each of you that June 30, 2012 was my last day as a Recreation Consultant for LERN. LERN Leadership has made a decision to redirect the resources that have supported the consulting position for recreation into other areas leadership believes has a greater potential for growth.

It has been my privilege to work with many of you. Providing resources, helping you solve issues facing your department or a specific program, sharing information on emerging trends and best practices in programs and facilities, and scheduling webinars pertinent to your day to day operations have been a few of my goals in serving and assisting you during the past seven years. I have been very impressed with your professionalism, energy, and creativity given these trying times and budget cuts.

I wish you only the best as you move forward.

Sincerely,
Mike Zuziak, CPRP

Zumba Fitness Classes Hot Nationwide

The popularity of Zumba classes is increasing daily. The Zumba craze is not showing any signs of fading out any time soon. Many parks and recreation departments are adding this class to their overall fitness programs. LERN Parks and Recreation Agency Member staff also rate Zumba fitness classes as their most popular adult activity and an excellent revenue producer.
Introduced in the United States in early 2000 the fitness class continues to grow. This growthtrend has been attributed to an easy to do workout that differs from a normal aerobics workout. Zumba involves dancing and working out to traditional salsa and meringue music. It provides participants an opportunity to enjoy their workout to energetic music.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine some of the benefits of a Zumba fitness routine are –
It is a fun and easy workout where it is almost like a party. People who join in a Zumba fitness workout are more likely to meet and make new friends in this party like atmosphere.

Zumba is a great core workout. It uses moves that work the abs and back.

It increases strength and agility to the back and torso
Zumba helps tone and sculpt the torso
It is a work out and a dance class all rolled in together
Zumba has the potential to tone and reshape the whole body including arms, hips, heart and mind.

Zumba provides a great exercise routine with lots of sweat, without even realizing you are working out that hard.

It helps people lose weight combined with a sensible and well balanced diet plan. Some have had surprising results. The Zumba dance routine gives a person great interval training.

A Zumba work out is a great way to burn off fat. The amount of calories that can be burned off varies from person to person but there is a potential of burning anywhere from 300 - 1000 calories per hour. It all depends on your fitness level and the intensity of the work out. The work out is a watch and follow learning experience. The moves are repeated enough times that it is easy to follow plus they are not complicated moves.

If your department is not offering Zumba consider doing so soon. It is an activity that can be enjoyed as a family or as an individual. Zumba classes have also been developed for youth and into aquatic fitness workouts.

Parks and Recreation in Underserved Areas

Our nation is currently facing pressing public health concerns relating to obesity. As a result of skyrocketing obesity rates, chronic diseases are also on the rise. The dialogue around tackling obesity has shifted from solely focusing on nutrition towards understanding the built environment and its influence on promoting healthy lifestyles.
